2023 Zone 2 Regional Championship

After an hiatus of 3 years due to Covid and the big wet, teams of 21 players from the 4 District Associations making up Zone 2, namely Central Coast, Hunter River, Lower North Coast and Newcastle, travelled to Muswellbrook Golf Club over the weekend of 12 / 13 August to contest the Zone 2 Regional Championship.

The tournament is a singles event open to all golfers resident and members of Clubs from within the 4 DGAs but in conjunction the representative teams also play for the Sandy Cameron Shield and the Jim Baker Shield.

The Zone Champion for 2023 is David Alexander from the Toronto club who shot 143 for the 36 holes, closely followed by Muswellbrook local, Brady Benkovic on 144 with State player, Jye Picken, on 145.

The Junior Champion is Jayden Butler, also from Toronto, who finished on 153 with Toukley's rising star, Blake Cranston in the runner up position on 157.

The Master's event was captured by James Swanson who finished on 147. James has played in this event since he was a Junior so he knows his way around the regional titles.

Bryan McCann from Toukley grabbed the second 18 hole nett event with a score of 68 which was a particularly pleasing result demonstrating grit and determination after what is probably best described as a round he would rather forget on the Saturday.

In the Shield events CCDGA finished in second place in the Jim Baker Shield with an aggregate score for the 21 players of 2663. Newcastle DGA led the race in this particular event with an aggregate score of 2634. The  Sandy Cameron Shield however returned to the Coast when the Shelly Beach quartet of Liam Gocher, Shane Quick, Jamie Stephen and James Swanson combined to post an aggregate score of 446 for the 36 holes.

Congratulations are extended not only to our winning entrants but to the entire team for the way they handled themselves and represented CCDGA over the weekend.

We now look forward to hosting the event at Gosford and Wyong in 2024.
