The 2014 Eric Apperly Shield commenced on 20 July and in the first round Shelly Beach defeated Wyong 4 games to 2.
Teams in the series this year have been reduced due to the withdrawal of Charlestown and Gosford when both Clubs realised at the last minute that they would be unable to field teams.
The continual recruitment by metropolitan clubs of country players has a significant impact on the stable of players that country clubs have to select from and if this trend continues then competitions such as this have a limited lifespan and as a result many young players will not enjoy the benefit of playing in competitions such as this.
