This annual tournament involving players not only from the Coast but also Hunter River DGA, Lower North Coast DGA and Newcastle DGA was played at Magenta Shores Golf & Country Club over the weekend of 20/21 August 2016.
The weather was not kind to the players on the Saturday when strong winds buffeted the course the entire time play was under way and seemed to get stronger as the afternoon wore on. The greens were very hard due to a lack of water, the club's irrigation system is under repair, making shots into the green difficult but they still putted in true Magenta style once the ball was safely on the green. Needless to say in such difficult conditions scoring was extremely difficult and the DSR for the day came in at 81.
Sunday dawned much fairer and in bright sunny conditions with a gentle breeze blowing the scoring was much better and smiles returned to players faces as they found the going a little easier. Although the greens remained firm the relaxed conditions saw the scores coming down and Reece Oliver of Toukley, playing off scratch, found the conditions to his liking and returned the best score of the tournament of 66, 7 under par.
As a result of this great round Reece rushed up the leaderboard to be declared Joint Regional Champion with State player, Dylan Perry of Hunter River DGA, playing off a plus 6 handicap and returning a solid score for the 36 holes of 157.
The other highlight of the weekend was a hole in one on the difficult par 3 fourth hole by Ben Morgan, a junior from Kew Country Club.
