This event is played each year by teams from CCDGA, Hunter River DGA, Lower North Coast DGA and Newcsatle DGA with the winner holding the Col Johnston Shield for the ensuing 12 months.
The event comprises teams of 7, boys and girls, playing 3 nine hole matches and is designed to give youngsters identified as potential representatives a taste of inter district team play and match play. Team members cannot have represented the District previously and must be under 16 years of age,
Unfortunately, this year LNCDGA were not able to field a team and it was intended to play 3 nine holes of stableford, discarding the worst score each 9 with the trophy going to the team with the best aggregate score over the 27 holes.
Play at Breakers on Saturday 4 November was under grey skies with intermittent showers and at the end of play CCDGA had established a handy lead of 3 points from HRDGA with Newcastle a further 4 back.
Unfortunately, the rain was consistent all night but all of the kids arrived for an early start on Sunday and indeed all teed off but were only half way through the first 9 when the course became unplayable. Called from the course to get them high and dry, they could not resist the urge to play chip shots to the practise green much to the concern of the team managers all of whom had visions of concerned parents berating them for allowing their children to stay out in the rain catching colds etc. The trophy was declared halved (perhaps that should be tripled).
For the relatively short time they were there all of the kids displayed excellent manners and etiquette and all 3 Districts can be rightly proud of these stars of the future.
