The 2019 Encourage Shield, an event for young golfers who have never played in the scratch position in Pennants, commenced Sunday 19 May with matches being played at Magenta Shores and Shelly Beach.
Designed to give these players a taste of Match Play, the event is played in handicap order with shots given in accordance with the Match Play index of the host club. Most of the teams have young girl(s) playing and it is hoped that this experience will see them go on to long and successful careers in golf.
The average handicap across the 6 teams that played on Sunday 19 was 21 and although there were a few large wins there were also some close contests and hopefully this experience has given all of the kids a taste for more match play as they are the future of our Clubs.
At the end of the day some teams must win and some must lose but the season is still young and there is plenty of time for losing sides from Sunday's competition to turn things around. The results of the matches played are Shelly Beach defeated Toukley 4/2, CCDGA (a composite side) defeated Magenta Shores 6/0 and Gosford and Everglades squared their match 3 matches each.
