Nathan Waters from Muswellbrook, a Hunter River player well known to our representative players, successfully defended his 2011 title when he fired rounds of 67 and 68 against par of 72 at Muswellbrook Golf Club over the weekend of 3 & 4 November.
The course was swept by strong winds during the first round which made scoring very difficult for most players but Waters local knowledge, he is the current Muswellbrook Club Champion, enabled him to establish a very comfortable lead. Conditions on day 2 were ideal for low scoring and although a number of players made a run at the leader he was able to reproduce his form from day 1 and finished with a comfortable 5 shot buffer over Logan Toms from Woolgoolga.
Waters was well supported by the remaining members of the Hunter River team which took the inter district team challenge. Local knowledge of the Muswellbrook course no doubt played a big part in their win as it is a course on which you need to place shots in preparation for the following shot.
Michael Bowditch was the best performer for CCDGA with solid rounds of 75 and 74 and, with a good look at the course on the first day, every member of our team cut shots from their score for the 2nd round. In the team challenge we finished in 10th place which was a little disappointing given that this year we swept all before us in inter district competitions but really reflected the strength of the field and the number of plus handicaps on display is indicative of the strength in country golf.
