The 2017 NSW Country Championship, entry to which is restricted to non metropolitan players, was played in Goulburn over the weekend of 12 / 13 August and played in conjunction with the Championship was the Country teams championship featuring teams of 6 players from the respective DGAs. The CCDGA team for the event was Jordie Garner, Jason Hyde, Kieren Jones, Reece Oliver, Brent White and David Willett.
Goulburn in August was always going to be a test and Saturday saw the temperature rocket to 13 degrees at tee off but with the howling gale blowing it felt more like 3. Jordie Garner ground out a great 1 under par round of 69 to be one of 6 leaders going into the final round. At the end of round 1 the CCDGA team was placed 8th in the teams event.
Sunday dawned fine with little breeze and, although chilly, not as cold as was anticipated. The breeze picked up a little during the course of the round but was not as severe as it was on Saturday. All watching thought that the scoring would probably be a few shots better than Saturday but it was not to be and finishing with a 1 over par round of 71 Jordie finished in a tie for 3rd place.
Unfortunately, the team were not able to improve their position but they all tried hard over the 2 days in testing conditions.
The Championship was won by Jake Davies, a relative newcomer to the game, from Gungahlin Lakes in the ACT (no doubt a little more experienced in playing in icy winds) who, after returning a par round on Saturday was able to return a 3 under round for the win.
